Painting in action - the painting of the reflections begins

"The paint is now dry so that I am able to continue by adding the next few layers. As the tide comes in it eventually flows at a similar rate to the river flowing out, so that a flat calm appears for a short while. So long as no wind is blowing then a mirror image reflection falls on the waters surface. As I was about to paint this reflection last week a motor boat snarled along and the wash disturbed the reflection and by the time that it had settled the tide had turned and the reflection was lost. But that is the joy of painting "au plein air!".

I have painted the reflection with a dry brush so that the paint catches the high spots and does not flow into the dips, the technical term for this is scrubbling. As the previous layers of paint are dry I then use Liquin to glaze the surface and gradually build up layers so that the water appears transparent

I have also started to build up the leaves on the trees and put some more texture into the river banks. There were some cows in the far field which I will include tomorrow, and I will also paint seagulls on the splodges where the midges have stuck to the sky!"
